|Fellow Americans –
I hope you all had a safe and relaxing Labor Day. I want to extend a quick thank you to Franklin Farmers Market and all my fellow market-goers for a fantastic time over the weekend as I wrapped up the August work period in Tennessee. I was honored for the opportunity to express my gratitude to the City of Franklin Police Department at the first annual Hometown Hero Appreciation Day.
Don’t Let the President Give Away the Internet
It has been a busy week here in Washington. The Obama Administration has signaled its willingness to give up its oversight of the Internet’s domain name system and transfer it to a global stakeholder community at the end of September. This move will create a real void and totalitarian states like Russia or China could step in, censor speech, and block access to sites they don’t like. This is simply absurd. I took to the House Floor on Tuesday to discuss the matter. You can watch the video below and read about it here.
The Administration’s $1.7 Billion Payment to a State Sponsor of Terrorism
As a matter of federal law, we as a country do not pay ransom to foreign governments. It was revealed this week however, that the Administration has handed over $1.7 Billion to Iran, a State Sponsor of Terrorism, since January, when the country released four Americans being held prisoner. Officials are parsing words and saying the money was “leverage” and not “ransom,” but do they really think we can’t see what’s going on here? This sets an extremely dangerous precedent with an even more dangerous country that has shown zero regard for America and its values. More of my thoughts below.
Working to Improve Public Health
During the Energy and Commerce’s Subcommittee on Health hearing this week, I was able to recognize programs that are important to many Tennesseans like palliative care, underage drinking prevention, diabetes treatment options, and congenital heart disease research. If you’d like to read more about the work being done, you can find additional details here.
Expanding Broadband Access
The expansion of broadband internet access is an important issue to many Tennesseans living in rural counties. McClure Telephone Company has been successful in upgrading services and expanding access in Ohio without passing additional costs on to customers. I had the opportunity yesterday to speak with McClure’s President Lance Miller about the company’s efforts and learn how others could replicate these results in TN 07.
This Sunday marks the 15th anniversary of September 11th. We should all take some time this weekend to reflect not only on those who lost their lives on that tragic day, but also remember the family and friends they left behind. Be sure to honor the first responders and our men in women in uniform who fight for our freedom every single day. Though a somber day for our nation, we must remain vigilant in our stand against the enemy and always feel proud to be an American.
