A Better Way To A Confident America

Earlier this year, House Speaker Paul Ryan announced the formation of six task forces to develop an agenda for the House to address some of our country’s most pressing issues. These task forces, which were led by committee leaders and incorporated many members’ ideas, will present bold policy proposals on six key topics: national security; tax reform; reducing regulatory burdens; health care reform; poverty, opportunity and upward mobility; and restoring our Constitution.

Since February, the task forces have met regularly to discuss and debate ideas. They’ve heard from thought leaders, stakeholders and members from the Republican Conference who have expertise within various fields. I participated in several of the task forces, and I’m excited to review the policy agendas of each of the six panels.

Our country is headed in the wrong direction, which is why I strongly believe in the work the task forces are doing to present the American people with real, substantive, conservative solutions that have been developed based on the concerns and feedback from constituents around the country. This is the People’s House, and Republicans must do more than just oppose the President’s reckless agenda; we must put forward a positive, pro-growth agenda to show a better way toward a stronger America at home and abroad. This administration has given us no shortage of misguided policy proposals to oppose, but the American people – you – deserve the opportunity to hear thoughtful alternatives.

Take health care for example: After opposing ObamaCare at every turn, I introduced a comprehensive health care bill to repeal and replace the president’s health care law. My bill, the American Health Care Reform Act, would repeal ObamaCare, but it would also lower costs, preserve patient choice and keep government bureaucrats out of health care decisions. I introduced this bill to start an important conversation; to look at not just how we would repeal Obamacare, but how we would replace it with policies that work for hardworking American families. As a physician and co-chair of the GOP Doctors Caucus, I communicated these ideas directly to the task force on health care reform.

These task forces set out to answer some key questions. We know we need to work on national security and become the leader of the world again, but how do we do it? We know tax reform and reducing regulation will spur economic recovery and job creation, but what exactly does that look like? We want to empower families to get back on their feet and repeal and replace Obamacare, but what tools can we give them to do those things without a massive expansion of government? And finally, after President Obama has used the courts and federal agencies to massively expand executive power, how can we restore our nation’s most sacred document, our Constitution? These are not small tasks, but they are critical to the future of our country.

When I travel throughout my district I hear the frustrations and hardships of so many, and they deserve a government that works. The American people deserve to know that they can trust their members of Congress to represent their views and interests each time they vote in Congress, and they deserve to know that real progress is being made on their behalf.

This week, Speaker Ryan presented the agenda of the task forces on poverty and national security to the People, and in the weeks to come, you’ll hear from the remaining task forces. These solutions will make clear what’s at stake with our country’s leadership. House Republicans plan to show that there is a Better Way toward the American you deserve: a confident America.
