Congressman Tom Emmer – 158th birthday of the great state of Minnesota
News from Representative Tom Emmer
This week, I joined the rest of the Minnesota Congressional Delegation to celebrate the 158th birthday of the great state of Minnesota in the best way possible…with a hotdish competition.
The hotdish competition is hosted annually by Senator Al Franken and is a great way to celebrate one of the traditions that makes our state so unique. This year’s competition was full of amazing entries including one that paid tribute to the late artist Prince. My submission was the “Havana Hotdish” as a tribute to the work that I am doing to improve relations with Cuba.
Even though my recipe did not win this year, (Rep. Tim Walz was the winner with his Turkey Taco Tot hotdish) I still enjoyed getting together with fellow Minnesotans and bonding over a true Minnesotan staple.
Fighting the Opioid Epidemic
There is a national epidemic that is plaguing our nation: opioid addiction and abuse. Addiction is a disease that does not discriminate, knows no bounds, and even happens in small town Minnesota. While there is no quick fix to the addiction problems that this nation faces, I was glad to participate in the overwhelming amount of dialogue that took place in the House this week regarding the issue.
On Thursday, I spoke on the House Floor to talk about the severity of the opioid abuse, and later that day I participated in the House GOP’s Radio Row to talk about a few pieces of legislation that I believe will help to combat the issue. To watch my speech on the House Floor, click here.
Let’s Celebrate Small Business
Last week was Small Business Week, so I decided to dedicate this week’s Ask Tom video to the outstanding entrepreneurial spirit of this great nation. Click here to watch.
Behind the Bar
On Monday, I participated in Starbucks Behind the Bar Program. I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet with employees and discuss both their veterans hiring program and Starbucks College Achievement Program.
I think my presentation needs a little work.
The Deadline is Quickly Approaching!
Our deadline for applications to Minnesota’s Sixth Congressional District Young Women Leadership Program is rapidly approaching.
This exciting program allows for high school girls to meet and interact with professional women in the great state of Minnesota who have built successful careers or hold leadership roles in government, business, media and other occupations.
Participants in this program will take part in open roundtable discussions with their peers and women professionals, all while sharing insights, guidance, and stories.
