Dear Friend,

Today I am praying for calm, for peace, and for healing in our nation.

A Victory in Improving Mental Health

One of the greatest challenges facing our country today is how to proactively identify and treat people suffering from mental health problems. As some of you may already know, one in five adults will suffer from mental illness in their lifetime.

That statistic is staggering, which is why last November I cosponsored the Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis of 2015 and yesterday, I joined the majority of my colleagues to pass this crucial legislation through the House. The Helping Families in Mental Health Crisis of 2015 would not only help treat mental health patients by removing burdensome rules that prohibit funds for mentally ill patients, but it would also work to remedy these diseases by funding advanced studies on the brain to better understand what causes them.

If we all can come together to find solutions for those struggling with mental illness, I believe that we will have the potential for a healthier and safer society, which is why I promise to do everything I can to achieve this for as long as I am in office.

We Must Protect the Financial Future of Minnesotans

On Wednesday, I spoke on the House Floor about the Department of Labor’s fiduciary rule, which threatens the ability of ordinary Americans to save for retirement. To be more specific, the fiduciary rule mandates that financial advisors must move from a commission based business model to a fee based business model.

As a consequence of this disastrous rule, financial advice will become more expensive and in some cases, will result in Minnesotans not receiving financial advice at all. We cannot allow this burdensome rule to wreak havoc on the financial future of American citizens. Despite the President’s veto, I remain committed to preventing this rule from harming the future for everyday Minnesotans. To hear my floor speech on the fiduciary rule, click here.

Hope to See You There

This week I announced that I will be holding two town halls during the month of August. The first event for the month will be held in Washington County and the second will be held in Benton County.

Last year, I held a town hall in every county within Minnesota’s Sixth District in order to remain accountable, transparent and accessible – and this year will be no different. My role as a Congressman is to listen to and serve the fine people in my district, so it is imperative that I hear their questions and concerns directly. That is why I place such a high importance on town halls – there is no better way to hear from the people. I am very much looking forward to these next few town halls and hope to see many of you there.
