This week in the office of U.S. Senator Marco Rubio:

  • Marco and Senator Mark Kirk (R-IL) introduced a bill to prohibit Iranian access to the U.S. financial system and the use of offshore U.S. dollar clearing, following  reports that the Obama Administration plans to help the country illicitly access U.S. dollars. “ The Iranian regime has failed to prevent rampant money laundering and has continued to finance terrorist organizations and expand its ballistic missile program, showing a blatant disregard for U.S. sanctions and the integrity of the international financial system,” Marco said. “Iranian access to U.S. dollars or the U.S. financial system, whether direct or indirect, will only further support these threatening and destabilizing activities.” Learn more about Marco and Senator Kirk’s bill to prevent Iranian access to U.S. financing here
  • Marco pressed FEMA officials on disaster aid for the recent Panhandle tornadoes at a Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee hearing. “Given that these storms occurred in the same week and were only 30 miles apart, I believe FEMA should be able to roll the damage totals from the area into one request,” said Marco. • Marco pressured the Small Business Administration on disaster relief for businesses affected by the Lake Okeechobee discharges at the same Senate Small Business & Entrepreneurship Committee hearing. Marco’s pressure resulted in the SBA announcing that Florida businesses affected by Lake Okeechobee discharges are now eligible for disaster loan relief. • Marco and Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) urged Secretary of the Treasury Jacob Lew and Secretary of State John Kerry to fully implement the Hizballah International Financing Prevention Act of 2015 that was signed into law last year. “It is important to continue pressure on Hizballah and its operatives to ensure it is not able to carry out terrorist or destabilizing activities, especially in light of Treasury’s statement in January that Hizballah continues to launder funds and foment violence in Lebanon, Syria, and across the region,” the senators wrote. • On Friday Marco was in Miami to host a briefing and press conference on the Zika virus. “And I want people to know that while I’m supportive of fully funding the president’s initiative on this, I want to make sure that the money, when appropriated, will be appropriately spent on what we’re trying to address here,” Marco said.
